BI Developer

Salford Quays / Salary: £38,000 -£43,000 (depending on experience) / Department: Business Intelligence / Hours: 35 hours Monday to Friday

We’re looking for a Business Intelligence (BI) Developer to come and join our Data as a Service (DaaS) team  in Manchester.

As a BI Developer you will be responsible for the development and support of all our business intelligence and data solutions. As part of the Data as a Service (DaaS) team you’ll work closely with colleagues to design, build and manage our data solutions.

Candidates are expected to have energy and passion to deliver using a whole range of technologies and have a solid understanding of data principles while taking ownership and lead projects.
 
Responsibilities
Your role will involve working with millions of records daily to help analyse and shape future business growth. You will be responsible for delivering fresh and fast performing intelligent data to business users, mostly utilising MS-SQL 2012 and above. As a company, we use enterprise and standard editions with further exposure to Azure, data lakes and many of the ‘best of’ software, such as Quest Spotlight and RedGate tools. Further responsibilities include:
  • Monitoring and enhancement of KPI’s and SLA’s
  • Collaborating with product owners and other teams
  • Mentoring peer and code reviews
  • Ensuring availability of all data
  • Monitoring environments and data performance to alleviate bottlenecks and ensure continued delivery of service
  • Build and maintain high quality robust ETL solutions and other SSIS packages
  • Building reports and dashboards.
  • Performance tuning
  • Design and develop reusable code that are easy to maintain, understand and re-use
  • Learn new technologies and keep abreast of existing technologies and be able to apply these to a variety of projects as applicable
  • Work with the team to size and estimate work
  • Contribute to the evolution of best practices of the department
  • Write, review and take responsibility for clear, concise and comprehensive technical documentation
  • Supporting live products
  • Any other reasonable duties as required
 
Essential to the role
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 or above, Microsoft SQL Server Integration services (SSIS), Microsoft SQL Server Reporting services (SSRS) and experience with Microsoft SQL Server Analysis services (SSAS)
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving data problems and performance issues
  • Plan and coordinate data migrations and ETL development
  • Experience implementing and managing monitoring and alerting processes to maintain the health of data solutions
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A flexible approach and positive attitude
  • Ability to work towards strict deadlines within a fast- paced environment
  • Excellent time management and coordinating skills
 
Desired Expertise (but not essential)
  • Experience using tools such as Quest Spotlight, IDERA, SQL Sentry and RedGate SQL toolbelt, Power Pivot, Advanced MS Excel, MS Power BI desktop, Tableau
  • Experience tuning and optimising reports
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Azure, Atlassian Confluence, as well as data solutions such as Hadoop and AWS
  • Experience working with XML data
  • Knowledge of table partitioning
  • Understand principles of data governance
  • Experience working in an agile development environment
  • Quality focused solution development using techniques such as TDD, BDD or Agile
  • Team foundation Server (TFS) qualification
