Victory at the B’ashes
Yesterday saw a team of seven 1ST CENTRAL athletes enter into the annual Workplace B’Ashes, held at the 1ST CENTRAL Country Ground in Hove.
This was a KwikCricket tournament, which is a smaller version of the traditional cricket game played with a softball and a few other variations of the normal rules, designed to make it fun and accessible for all abilities.
During a fantastic opening game, 1ST CENTRAL took a big lead in the group with stunning bowling performances from Karen Soong and Glen Rodgers. Tom Hughes then stepped up with the bat to put on an impressive score.
The second game was a close fought contest, with both teams losing wickets early on. But once again with some impressive batting we were able to secure a victory.
Our final group matched proved to be our toughest, coming up against a well-trained and competitive opposition. Despite our strong batting we were unable to equal their total and finished second in the group.
Scraping through to the knockout stages, we showed our fielding excellence with bowling from Harry Dean and Phil Elkins in the quarter and semi-finals, along with Ali Spencer, Glen and Tom generating some big batting scores to see us into the finals, where we came up against (once again) the winners of our group.
After being defeated by them earlier on, we came back with a vengeance. Batting first, we made an impressive total with a big innings from Glen, Phil, Ali and Tom. And when we came to bowl, we took several crucial wickets with excellent bowling from Karen and Glen and catches being made left right and centre from our fielders. We kept their run rate low, and with some superb bowling from Tom at the death, we were able to secure victory and bring home the silverware.
